Lightning Impulse Overvoltage Propagation in HVDC Meshed Grid

This paper reports on the propagation of lightning overvoltage in a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) meshed grid. Since several topologies grids have been elaborated last decade, we used common comprehensive reference test platform. The impulse was investigated with regard to impact surge arresters and polarity stroke concerning DC line (±500 kV). Various scenarios were considered, including strike DC+ conductor, tower, shielding wire middle span, backflash insulators. influence tower footing impedance levels at various nodes assessed, depicting critical value. A description models simulations provided. main focus wide-area overvoltages grid, distant terminals inside feeders. An interesting observation effects far end analyzed propagating through multiterminal long-distance connections. presented analysis, based an exemplary HVDC underlines importance insulation coordination studies system security respect localization protection systems.
